What a 10 yard is actually for

A 10 yard is the shortest container we run and the easiest to load: the walls are only about three and a half feet, so you can tip a wheelbarrow over the rail instead of walking it up a ramp. It takes roughly three pickup loads. On a short Augusta driveway, or one with a turn in it, this is often the only size that goes on cleanly.

The more important reason to book one is weight. Concrete, brick, dirt, tile and plaster are dense enough that a container fills its weight allowance long before it fills up. Put six inches of broken concrete in a 20 yard and you are already at the limit with an empty-looking box on the driveway, paying for volume you cannot use. The 10 yard exists so that job costs what it should.

That is the moment to take a 15 or a 20 instead. One container that fits the job costs less than a second haul, every time.

Weight is what catches people out

Every flat price includes delivery, pickup, the rental period and a weight allowance — 1–2 tons on a 10 yard. Go past it and you pay a per-ton overage on the difference, and we tell you that rate before you book rather than after the load is weighed. Loads are weighed at the landfill and the ticket is what any charge is based on.

The rule that saves people money: pick by weight for dirt, concrete, tile and shingles, and by volume for everything else. Heavy material belongs in a 10 or a 15 even when the pile looks big, because those sizes exist for exactly that.

Will it fit where you want it?

A 10 yard needs its own length on flat ground plus clear space in front for the truck to slide it off, and nothing overhead — low branches, eaves, gutters and wires are what stop a delivery far more often than the driveway does. Boards go under the container before it comes off the truck, so the surface underneath is protected.
