What a 40 yard is actually for

The 40 yard is 22 feet long with eight foot walls — about twelve pickup loads, and the most capacity we can put on a truck. It is a job-site container rather than a driveway one: the footprint is the same as a 20 or a 30, but at eight feet high you want a loader, a chute or a crew throwing from a height, not one person with a wheelbarrow.

Book it when the problem is volume and the material is light: demolition debris, roofing paper and insulation, packaging, furniture, fixtures, timber. Five tons are included. That is the largest allowance we offer, and it is still the limit that decides a 40 yard long before the top rail does on anything dense.

When to take a different size

A 40 yard is the wrong container for heavy material and it is worth being blunt about it. Concrete, brick, dirt, tile and shingles will pass 5 tons with the container barely a third full, and you pay a per-ton overage for the privilege. For those loads take a 10 or a 15, or run two of them. Most yards will happily drop you the biggest box; we would rather get it right.

Weight is what catches people out

Every flat price includes delivery, pickup, the rental period and a weight allowance — 5 tons on a 40 yard. Go past it and you pay a per-ton overage on the difference, and we tell you that rate before you book rather than after the load is weighed. Loads are weighed at the landfill and the ticket is what any charge is based on.

The rule that saves people money: pick by weight for dirt, concrete, tile and shingles, and by volume for everything else. Heavy material belongs in a 10 or a 15 even when the pile looks big, because those sizes exist for exactly that.

Will it fit where you want it?

A 40 yard needs its own length on flat ground plus clear space in front for the truck to slide it off, and nothing overhead — low branches, eaves, gutters and wires are what stop a delivery far more often than the driveway does. Boards go under the container before it comes off the truck, so the surface underneath is protected.

If you are not sure, describe the approach when you call. Two questions usually settle it, and we would rather work that out on the phone than have a truck turn up and not be able to place it.
