What a 20 yard is actually for

If you only remember one size, remember this one. The 20 yard takes about six pickup loads and includes 3 tons, and at 22 feet long by 4 feet high it is still low enough to load over the rail and short enough for a standard Augusta driveway. Most Martinez and Evans driveways take one without any trouble.

It is the size that covers the widest range of jobs: a whole-house cleanout, a kitchen and two bathrooms, a roof replacement, a big garage-and-attic clear before a move. When somebody describes a project on the phone and it could plausibly be a 15 or a 30, the 20 is almost always the one that turns out right.

When to take a different size

Two things push a job up to a 30 yard: height and bulk. If you are throwing out a lot of furniture, cabinetry or framing, the extra two feet of wall on a 30 is worth more than the extra length. And if the material is heavy — concrete, dirt, two layers of shingles — go the other way and take a 10 or 15, because you will hit the weight allowance long before you fill a 20.

Weight is what catches people out

Every flat price includes delivery, pickup, the rental period and a weight allowance — 3 tons on a 20 yard. Go past it and you pay a per-ton overage on the difference, and we tell you that rate before you book rather than after the load is weighed. Loads are weighed at the landfill and the ticket is what any charge is based on.

The rule that saves people money: pick by weight for dirt, concrete, tile and shingles, and by volume for everything else. Heavy material belongs in a 10 or a 15 even when the pile looks big, because those sizes exist for exactly that.

Will it fit where you want it?

A 20 yard needs its own length on flat ground plus clear space in front for the truck to slide it off, and nothing overhead — low branches, eaves, gutters and wires are what stop a delivery far more often than the driveway does. Boards go under the container before it comes off the truck, so the surface underneath is protected.
