What a 15 yard is actually for

The 15 yard is the one people end up in when a 10 is tight and a 20 is more container than the driveway wants. It is four feet longer than the 10 and half a foot taller, which works out at four to five pickup loads, and at 16 feet it still parks in front of a single garage without blocking the whole frontage.

It is the natural size for material that is moderately heavy and comes out in quantity: flooring, a deck, a small roof. Two tons is included, which is plenty for a room of tile or a deck's worth of treated timber, and it is the size we reach for when someone describes a job as “one big room, everything out”.

Jobs a 15 yard suits

When to take a different size

Roofing is where this size gets decided by weight rather than by volume. One layer of architectural shingles runs about 300–400 lb a square, so 15 squares is already close to two tons before underlayment and nails. Weight is what catches people out

Every flat price includes delivery, pickup, the rental period and a weight allowance — 2 tons on a 15 yard. Go past it and you pay a per-ton overage on the difference, and we tell you that rate before you book rather than after the load is weighed. Loads are weighed at the landfill and the ticket is what any charge is based on.

The rule that saves people money: pick by weight for dirt, concrete, tile and shingles, and by volume for everything else. Heavy material belongs in a 10 or a 15 even when the pile looks big, because those sizes exist for exactly that.

Will it fit where you want it?

A 15 yard needs its own length on flat ground plus clear space in front for the truck to slide it off, and nothing overhead — low branches, eaves, gutters and wires are what stop a delivery far more often than the driveway does. Boards go under the container before it comes off the truck, so the surface underneath is protected.

If you are not sure, describe the approach when you call. Two questions usually settle it, and we would rather work that out on the phone than have a truck turn up and not be able to place it.
